Each one of us faces unique challenges in our professional lives. I am not an exception to it. People always see the ‘rosy picture’ of being a doctor, so today I thought of sharing my views about the challenges that I faced as a young aesthetic surgeon.

Establishing Credibility: Building a Reputation in the Competitive Field of Aesthetic Surgery
As a young aesthetic surgeon, earning the trust and confidence of patients and peers can be a challenge. To overcome this, I prioritize continuous learning, acquiring certifications, and staying updated with the latest advancements in the field. By demonstrating my expertise and dedication, I strive to build a strong reputation.
During my Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship in Austria, I worked with five surgeons, each specializing in different aspects of aesthetic surgery. I was the first plastic surgeon from India to train under them, and they were quite impressed with the skill levels of surgeons from India. I also got hands on experience, actively assisting the surgeons, as well as performing key steps of surgeries myself. This is quite rare among training fellowships.
I was surprised at their surgical volume, in the three months that I spent there, I was an active part of over 150 surgeries, with many more non-surgical procedures. What’s heartening is the number of friends I’ve made through my fellowships. They’ve allowed me to network and connect with like-minded people.

Overcoming Skepticism: Gaining Trust and Confidence from Patients and Peers
Gaining the trust and confidence of patients is a significant hurdle, as they are well-informed and have access to abundant resources. Additionally, my age often leads to questions about my expertise and experience. In India, gray hair has traditionally been associated with expertise and good results, especially in medicine.
I focus on showcasing my knowledge, skills, and achievements. Transparency about my experience and age helps build trust and establish a good rapport with my patients. I always emphasize that, while I may lack experience, I make up for it with dedication and a commitment to delivering good results. Staying updated with the latest techniques and maintaining a solid portfolio of successful cases further strengthens my credibility. In addition to it, there are Google reviews from my patients, which help me establish credibility and avoid skepticism.
Navigating the Hierarchy: Understanding the Dynamics and Expectations in Medical Institutions
Competing with Senior Professionals: Carving Out a Niche Amidst Experienced Surgeons
The field of medicine has a strict hierarchical structure, where senior surgeons are often preferred by hospitals and patients. Age is erroneously associated with competence and good results, making it challenging for younger surgeons like me to compete.
The field has three broad generations: the very senior, the present elite, and the fresh surgeons. The former are the ones most willing to teach and guide. The middle group is the surgeons operating at their peak, and at times they might view me as competitive and be unwilling to teach.
However, I’m fortunate that the field is also full of people who are sensitive to the struggles of young surgeons, having gone through the same, and they are willing to guide me. My approach is different. I navigate this structure with grace by recognizing the willingness of senior surgeons to teach and guide. I have had to rethink my personality to be able to freely approach seniors for guidance, understanding that taking opportunities is crucial for growth. As Michael Jordan said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Seminars and conferences provide excellent platforms to interact with experienced surgeons, where I have been fortunate to build connections and friendships. Aesthetic surgeons form a close-knit community that supports and mentors younger professionals. I love attending the annual aesthetic surgery conference, AESURG. The Conference in 2022 was my first, and it’s amazing to see the human side of these aesthetic surgery giants.
Embracing Technological Advancements: Staying Ahead with the Latest in Aesthetic Surgery Innovations
Aesthetic surgery constantly evolves with technological advancements, requiring younger surgeons to embrace these changes. As far as learning about new technology is concerned, it is not a challenge. However, the significant capital investment that it calls for is definitely a challenge.
While capital requirements may be higher, younger surgeons have the advantage of adaptability. I leverage this advantage to embrace new technologies and stay ahead of the curve. By carefully investing in advanced equipment and staying updated on the latest innovations, I offer my patients cutting-edge procedures and improved outcomes.
Creating Personal Connections: Building Strong Relationships with Patients and Colleagues
Connecting with patients from different age groups and backgrounds can be challenging. I foster a warm and empathetic environment where patients feel comfortable sharing their concerns and goals. Active listening, understanding their unique needs, and tailoring treatment plans accordingly are key to building strong relationships.
The way I try to bridge this gap is by connecting with my patients through digital media. I leverage social media and my website to educate and engage with patients. Through these platforms, I offer valuable insights, share before-and-after photos, and provide a glimpse into my practice. This helps in establishing a personal connection with patients.
Being a young aesthetic surgeon is undoubtedly challenging, but by focusing on continuous learning, building credibility, embracing technology, and fostering personal connections, I strive to overcome these challenges. My goal is to provide the highest quality care to my patients and help them achieve their aesthetic goals with confidence.
